the high school and college athletes have been
considered "healthy" groups and are,
therefore, relatively ignored from a medical
surveillance perspective. However, LHF initial studies have
shown that as many as 30% to 40% of such youths already
have one or more abnormalities detected.

In the current era, the market demand has driven
professional sports into the world of high finance and
big stage entertainment. In this milieu, the
premium is on performance and winning. It appears
that "bigger" is better. The LHF is
analyzing the health situation to attempt separation of
fact and fiction. There is a clear need to be open
and transparent in this evaluation process.
